ROADS

Since the economy of Bankura district is still agrarian in character and the settlement pattern scattered and rural oriented, the network of roads and bridges constitute a critical role with regard to transportation of essential goods and services. The existing road transportation system connects different parts of the district with Calcutta and other important towns. It is phenomenal that if a region be road way connected with each of its settlement then 30 percent development follows spontaneously as per the need and culture. Since this district is a continuation of the Chhotonagpur Plateau, as a result the availability of raw materials is for black top road on one hand and on the other hand the characteristic of soil is favorable for road construction works. A total amount of Rs. 51.81 crores is allotted to implement its scheme and programs for Ninth Plan period, of which Rs. 21.00 crores from the state Plan Fund and Rs. 30.81 crores from the other sources. Railway system is also good. The district is mainly served by the South Eastern railway. The existing railway track passing through the district has a connectivity to the important places like Kolkata, Asansol, Kharagpur, Ranchi, Tatanagar etc.
